Four Must Watch Shows in 2021 for Black Women
Is it us, or has turning on Netflix become just muscle memory? You walk to the living room, open the app, and close it again because you’ve realized there’s really nothing else to watch. You’re probably begging for something else to distract you from the world’s hysteria and just your luck, we’ve listed a few of our favorite shows, but there’s a catch -– they’re all starring black women.
I May Destroy You (HBO)- In a brief description from HBO, the series is “set in London, where gratification is only an app away, the story centers on Arabella (Michaela Coel), a carefree, self-assured Londoner with a group of great friends, a boyfriend in Italy, and a burgeoning writing career. But when her drink is spiked, she must question and rebuild every element of her life.”

Run the World – Run the World is about a girl- friend group fairly reminiscent of the ones we’ve seen on Girlfriends, Living Single, and A Different World. The premise of the show follows the life of 4 women who reside in Harlem, NY. This series is set to release later this year on Starz (2021).

Lovecraft Country- This film is a person favorite as it dives into the social nuances of what it means to black mixed with futuristic sci-fi. In HBO’s description “ Based on Matt Ruff's novel of the same name, Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he meets up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.”

The Underground Railroad: We’ve heard stories and have possibly seen depictions of the story of “The Underground Railroad, but not like this.
