4 Black Women in Marketing Who Inspire Us
The top brands and businesses become household names due to one thing: their marketing strategy. A great marketing strategy can set the overall tone and energy of the brand. It is critical for brands to upkeep their brand image and the responsibility falls on the shoulders of their marketing team leaders. Everything from the commercials to the social media profiles is controlled under the overall brand image.
Marketing is not an easy job for people to maintain. There are a lot of nuances that need to be thought about when it comes to protecting any brand. Black women are breaking barriers in the marketing space for their innovative and creative ideas. Here are four Black women in marketing who inspire us.
LaToya Shambo
LaToya Shambo is not only a digital marketing expert, but also a businesswoman, true corporate mompreneur and public speaker. The media broker and digital marketing authority is responsible for leading hundreds of social media deals between Black female influencers and major brands. Shambo is also the founder and CEO of BLACK GIRL DIGITAL, INC., which is a premium digital marketing and influencer agency. He agency has worked with VH1, BET, MTV, Sephora, The Doux, Andre Walker Hair Care and Hairfinity on different projects gaining over 100 million impressions overall. On top of all of that, the marketing mogul oversees the million-dollar marketing budget and manages all brand partnerships for Kanekalon.
Bozoma Saint John
Currently the Global Chief Marketing Officer at Netflix, Bozoma Saint John got her start in marketing at Spike Lee’s advertising agency, Spike DDB. From there, she went on to manage brands within the PepsiCo beverages portfolio, become Head of Music and Entertainment Marketing at the CPG giant, become Head of Global Consumer Marketing at Apple Music & iTunes, serve as Chief Brand Officer at Uber and take on the CMO role for Endeavor. She was inducted into the American Advertising Federation Hall of Achievement (2014), Billboard’s Women in Music Hall of Fame (2018, 2020). Also, she was recognized on The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Power 100 list (2018) and on Forbes’ World’s Most Influential CMOs list (2018). Featured on the cover of Adweek, John earned the reputation as being “one of the most exciting personalities in advertising.” Alongside Katie Couric, she launched a podcast in 2020 called “Back to Biz with Katie and Boz,” which explores the ways thought leaders, CEOs and innovators are responding to the societal shifts that have been ushered in by the coronavirus pandemic.
Natalie Gullatt
With over eight years of marketing experience and over seven years post MBA work experience under her belt, Natalie Gullatt is an experienced strategic and passionate marketing manager. During her career, she founded the Black Marketers Association of America (BMAA), which is an organization that helps marketers of color have fulfilling careers. The goal of BMAA is to help grow Black marketers into marketing leaders and well rounded professionals through networking and professional development.
Michelle Ngome
Michelle Ngome is a connection strategist, marketing expert and consultant. She is the founder of Line 25 Consulting, which is a marketing firm focused on inclusive marketing. With the vision to be a generous connector to people so that they may have the relationships and resources they need to achieve their success, Ngome wrote a book, titled Network, Navigate & Nurture: The Equation to Strategic Networking, and created a podcast called Networking with Michelle. She is dedicated to creating and sharing opportunities with others. She founded the African-American Marketing Association, creating a platform that empowers Black marketers all over the United States.
