Perseverance
Angelica faced tragedy in her early years, losing her mother at the hands of her father through domestic violence at just six years old. She didn’t let her upbringing determine her path to success. She joined Peace4Kids, a program for foster youth to tap into their creative potential, where she developed a love for writing.
“I always knew I wanted to be a writer, even from a young age I found it extremely therapeutic and it got me through hard times,” she says.
Determination
Angelica struggled to motivate herself in her career as an accountant and decided to pursue writing again and an opportunity came up to write a script with Jordana Spiro.
Angelica’s script was accepted into Sundance Labs, an incubator programme for film scripts that worked with mentors such as Quentin Tarintino.
“I could not let this opportunity slip and decided to follow my dreams,” Angelica says.
Resourceful
Struggling to meet her rent obligation Angelica created a blog where she would write articles about celebrities, news, and popular culture. With limited resources, she set up the blog on Instagram.
“Posting stories on Instagram was not really a thing back then, as most profiles were personal”.
Within ten days, she had 10,000 followers. Today, The Shade Room has over 17.7m followers.
