Monique Idlett-Mosley Invests in Women and Minority Owned Businesses with Reign Ventures

Monique Idlett-Mosley has been an ad sales executive, a talent manager and now a partner at a venture capital firm. Reign Ventures began as an idea sparked by seeing the work Idett-Mosley’s eventual business partner, Erica Duignan Minnihan, was doing with 1000 Angels.

Today, Reign Ventures is a $25 million fund focused on investing in companies started by women and minorities. Since 2009, black women have received .0006 percent of all tech venture funding, something Idlett-Mosley hopes to change.

Before attending business school, where Idlett-Mosley and Minnihan met, Idlett-Mosley served as CEO of Mosley Brands and Mosley Music Group and managed artists including One Republic and Nelly Furtado. Before this, Idlett-Mosley worked as an ad sales executive at USA Today, a position which had a great impact on her life.

She was 22-year-old, soon-to-be college graduate and a mother when a senior executive decided to give Idlett-Mosley a chance, despite being 20 years underqualified for the position she was interviewing for. She was actually there to interview for a lower position, but saw the opportunity and ceased it.

The senior executive, who was a woman, said to Idlett-Mosley, “Just because you had the audacity to ask me for this, I know you’ll go out here and ask the clients for everything that you need.”

She then traveled to the paper’s corporate offices, interviewing with six VPs over three days before landing the job.

“See how a woman can help change another woman’s life?” Idlett-Mosley said in an interview with Entrepreneur.

Idlett-Mosley hopes to serve not only as an investor, but as a mentor. She wants to encourage women business owners to support other women as well as show young women that there are multiple avenues to success.
