Color Vision October Book of the Month, Make Shift Happens: How to Overcome the Mental Roadblocks in Life

Our October book of the month is here and it’s brought to you by author Annette 'Netty' Phillip whose book Make Shift Happen: How To Overcome Mental Roadblocks in Life touches on the negative stigma of mental health. We couldn’t think of a better way to recognize “mental health awareness month.” Check out our interview with Netty below:

Why is it important to you to highlight mental health?

I think it is important to highlight mental health because it is a stigma that is easily swept under the rug. People are seriously suffering in silence not knowing the severity in holding things in. I have come across a great number of people who just dont know how to talk about it. The discussion is whats needed to break the stigma.

There's such a negative stigma in today's current society when it comes to mental health, why do you think that is?

There is a negative stigma when it comes to mental health because people are afraid of the misconceptions they others may place on them. Also, a grave misunderstanding to these illnesses, they are considered dangerous, crazy or self inflicted.

How can we change the stigma associated with it?

We can change the stigma by continuing to talk about it. Creating free forums for discussion.

What do you want people to take away from your book?

I want people to take away more and clear understanding of the importance of mental health. It is ok to not be ok. And it is ok to talk about it.

What advice do you have for anyone afraid to discuss there mental health issues?

My advice to anyone suffering and afraid would be to first get my book 😉 and also know there are people you can reach out and talk to. Find someone who looks like you that you would feel comfortable enough to speak to. You are not alone.
